The Never Ending Global Virus Concern

The recent outbreak of A (H1N1) swine influenza (swine flu), has dominated the news, with original confirmed cases in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. The transmission now has global reach, with The New York Times reporting confirmed cases in Scotland, New Zealand, and Israel and suspected cases in South Korea, France, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. The number of people affected is growing exponentially and over 150 people have died in Mexico from the swine flu.

The World Health Organization is monitoring the developments and has raised their current alert to Phase 5. The CDC defines a Phase 5 alert as a "strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short."

This is an excellent time to remind everyone that proper hand hygiene and healthy habits are always your best line of defense against illness, especially with the swine flu outbreak.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have offered the best methods to keep yourself healthy:

  • Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating properly, and keeping physically active
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to reduce the amount of germs you expose yourself to
  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly, dry hands properly and effectively
